Jaime Albert Trost was diagnosed with Right-Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia at 19 weeks gestation. He was born at 34 weeks gestation on 4/16/09 as a hemophiliac with his liver and intestines in his chest. Jaime had his 1st repair surgery at 23 days old. He re-herniated in September 2009, causing his bowels, kidney and liver to be up in his chest. He had his 2nd repair surgery at 194 days old. Though Jaime still has many medical challenges ahead of him, today he is a thriving toddler who has beaten the odds!

Fever/Tonsils/Cincy....

First let me tell you about the wonderful weekend we had with The Smith Family at the Cleveland Zoo for the Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes! We were there in support of Connor. It was sooooo much fun for all of us. Abby Normal and the Detroit Lean, the band that Tom's in, was the entertainment for the day and Jaime adopted himself "Papa Frank," Colleen's Dad! Here are a few pics from the Walk.

OK, fast forward to yesterday...Jaime had a fever of 102, was acting completely abnormal (and not because he "sat-in" with Abby Normal the day before ;) and was completely clingy. No obvious symptoms except a fever. So, in Jaime's World, this means that his tonsils are infected again. After getting text updates on Jaime from his nurse yesterday, I decided to schedule him an appointment with his pediatrician. I met Tom and the boys there after work. His temp was 101.6 in the office and that was with Motrin on board, so the dr. gave him Tylenol in the office. She also did a strep culture because he had large pus filled bumps on his tonsils...NEGATIVE. UGH! Now we have no good source except it's Jaime being Jaime again. No antibiotics were prescribed at this time...I do have to call her tomorrow if he still has a fever. At 6:30 he was back up to 101.8, so I'm thinking I may be calling her! Having said that, we also talked about me contacting ENT again.
I called ENT today. We spoke for about 20 minutes and sort of came up with a tentative plan. Jaime is due to have his sleep study here in Cleveland at the Clinic on October 16th. If the sleep study shows any indication of obstructive airway, his tonsils are coming out! If it doesn't, we may dig deeper for a source of the constant throat infections. One thing they are looking into is something called "PFAPA Syndrome." It stands for Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and adenitis, in plain English, it is a syndrome that causes sores in the throat and mouth with a fever and swollen lymph nodes that comes and goes "routinely" every 3-5 weeks for a period of time (months). All of which Jaime has. This happened last year, two weeks after he got his ear tubes through about April. So, we're going to see if these seem to come scheduled...one way to treat this is a tonsillectomy. So, in short...if Mr. Jaime keeps this up, he's setting himself up for a tonsillectomy. We will do a thorough work up before going down this path, as it poses a HUGE bleeding risk for him. Just something that we're thinking about.
Now, as for Cincinnati...we FINALLY have a return date! We're going down there mid-October for our surgical consult. We're going to see our FAVORITE surgeon, GI and we're still working on hooking up with Cardiology at the same time, as Jaime is due for his routine Echo/EKG. Now, his sleep study will be after his surgical consult, so if it comes back that he needs a tonsillectomy, we will not go forward with the incisional hernia repair right away, as the tonsillectomy would be more of a pressing issue. Once again...a lot of "ifs" to consider! Jaime sure keeps us on our toes! ;)
Oh and before I close I have to share some exciting news...Jaime was weighed at the pediatrician yesterday....drum roll please....TWENTY NINE POUNDS! (OK so he was fully clothes in pants and a sweatshirt, but it counts right?!?) Of course today, he's not really eating because of his throat sores, so I'm sure he'll be around 28lbs before he gets better, but hey, I'll take any weight I can get on that boy! :)
Here's a pic of my sick skinny Minnie in his skinny jeans...can he be any cuter? ;)
(I think his head weighs 20lbs and the rest of him 9-HA!)

That's my update, wishing everyone a great week!
