Very Eventful Week

WOW, where to start! Let's give a little background starting with last Sunday.
Sunday, Sept. 23-Jaime was still recovering from what we were calling a cold. He had a very bad cough and was gagging and throwing up. He was on steroids and lots of breathing treatments last weekend.

Monday, Sept. 24-Jaime was due to go to Cincinnati for Dental surgery on Tuesday. We were worried because of his cold, but still opted to go. So, we drove down late on Monday for our early trip to the OR on Tuesday. We made it safely to Cincy.

Tuesday, Sept 25-We got to Cincinnati Children's Hospital at 7:30 am. Jaime got his IV started and then we took him to the OR around 9:30 am.

 About 20 minutes into the OR, we received a call from the surgeon who asked a few questions, then told us that Jaime's teeth look GREAT and that he would only need ONE tooth removed (instead of the 4 they were talking about removing). He had 2 small fillings, got a cleaning and sealants put in. He was out of the OR in just under 2 hours. He had some pain control issues, but once we resolved that, he was good to go! :) We went back to the hotel and Jaime was sooooo fascinated that his tooth was gone. This is what he did literally for hours! He was so cute!

 Wednesday, Sept. 26th, Jaime was doing GREAT, so the drs. said we could travel home. We made a visit to the Luken's house before leaving. Jaime was able to play with his buddy Max.

Thursday, Sept. 27th-Jaime was doing so well he went to school. It was picture day for Jaime and Jared. Here they are all ready for pictures! :)

Then, 5:00 pm came! Jaime started complaining about his belly hurting. Then he started whimpering, finally he threw up....again, and again, and again..... He was so bad that I called one of his nurses over to reassess him for me. We called the dr. who said to see how he does over night that it may just be because of the anesthesia. It was a VERY long night!
Friday, Sept. 28th-Jaime was so sick and getting very dehydrated, so Nana (who has been here all week helping with Jared) and I took him to the pediatrician. She looked at him and suggested that we take him to the ER. The original thought was a possible appendicitis. Tom and I brought him down to The Cleveland Clinic yesterday where he was poked and prodded all afternoon and into the middle of the night when he finally got admitted...for a small bowel obstruction.

Saturday, Sept. 29th-Jaime was finally admitted in the wee hours of the morning. Once on the floor he was assessed and the nurses placed an NG (nasal gastric tube) to suction out whatever belly contents he had. This is still in place now. We were told that since there wasn't much in his stomach that we can give him an enema and if he pooped we can remove the NG. Well, he did have the enema, but he never pooped. Over the course of the day, Jaime became more and more lethargic. He perked up for about a half hour when Jared and Nana came for a visit, but tired easily, so he went back to bed. He was quiet all day, in fact. Tom and I switched places, and they just called...Jaime was awake and talking a bit. He was still laying down, but at least he was verbal. He hasn't been like that all day. Tom said there was some talk of trying to give him some Pedialyte tonight, but we'll see. He had a low grade fever this evening and his white cells are elevated. I imagine they'll do more labs in the morning.

Please keep Jaime in your thoughts and prayers, as this small bowel obstruction has knocked him out. The surgeons are still trying to determine his care path. They are only going to do surgery as a last resort, so we're praying that things start to look up for Jaime soon! We were told that bowel obstructions can resolve in a few days up to several weeks. We're hoping for a few days. Once he does recover and can eat/drink again (he has had nothing to eat since lunch on Thursday) they are going to switch his formula to Pediasure Peptide, which we were told is gentler on the stomach and bowels. We also have been in touch with Cincinnati who are more than happy to have him transfer down there if surgery is needed. So, we'll just have to wait and see how all of this plays out.
