Jaime Albert Trost was diagnosed with Right-Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia at 19 weeks gestation. He was born at 34 weeks gestation on 4/16/09 as a hemophiliac with his liver and intestines in his chest. Jaime had his 1st repair surgery at 23 days old. He re-herniated in September 2009, causing his bowels, kidney and liver to be up in his chest. He had his 2nd repair surgery at 194 days old. Though Jaime still has many medical challenges ahead of him, today he is a thriving toddler who has beaten the odds!

Such is the life of a Hemophiliac!

So, I don't have any "concrete" schedule yet, but.....it's been decided that we WILL go forward with surgery, but not until we go back to Cincinnati for a full surgical consult! We will be meeting with Jaime's surgeon, a plastic surgeon, GI, and hematology, as well as have a motility test done. OK, so why are we checking in with everybody? Well, Jaime's surgeon hasn't seen him since earlier this year, so I asked him to "eye-ball" Jaime to get a feel for what his incisional hernia is doing. We're consulting with Plastics, not so that Jaime can wear a Speedo without having a scar (tee, hee), but because Jaime's surgeon wants their opinion on how to construct the closure of Jaime's hernia. Jaime may or may not have some sort of connective tissue disorder, we're hoping plastics can shed some light on this for us. The suspicion comes from the fact that Jaime reherniated within months of being repaired...additionally, got an incisional hernia within weeks of being closed. Then, on the latest CT and x-ray, Jaime's current diaphragmatic hernia repair is starting to have changes, but from what I'm told, still looks in tact at the moment. All of this simply isn't "normal" considering all the precautions that were taken to repair Jaime appropriately. We'll consult with GI just simply to follow up from our July visits and have them arrange our motility test. This will test basically how fast food is moving through Jaime's digestive track. Finally, we'll meet with hematology. The surgeon said that Jaime will be hospitalized for 3 to 5 days post-op (baring any issues), but will need to have IV Factor Infusions daily, if not multiple times a day for at least 2 weeks post-op at home. Hence my title of this post!
This is a GREAT time to remind everyone that the Annual Hemophilia Walk is fast-approaching! It will be here NEXT WEEK! We need your help now more than ever!
