Another Trip to the ER

After dinner yesterday, Jaime spiked a fever...it was close to 103. I gave him Tylenol and called the pulmonologist. We were advised to give him some time for the Tylenol to work, if he didn't get better, then we were to take him to the ER. As you guessed, he didn't get better...here are pics of him before going to the ER.

We got to the ER, Jaime's temp was down to 101.8., but his heart rate was still high and his breathing was very fast. He was retracting a lot, too. They immediately put us in a room. (I did call ahead to see what dr. was on). They gave him 2 breathing treatments, suctioned his nose and swabbed him for RSV and the flu, then placed an IV, drew labs and sent him for a chest x-ray. While waiting for the results, he got IV fluids, IV steroids and IV antibiotics and another breathing treatment. Jaime's x-ray was unchanged from his Tuesday one and his flu and RSV were both negative...thank God. His labs came back abnormal with a high white count indicating an infection and he was slightly "dry." Jaime's temp slowly came down, at one point we talked about admitting him, but his breathing became under control, so we were able to be discharged. He was basically diagnosed with an asthma attack. The ER dr. said that his fever exacerbated his respiratory status causing him to ultimately have a full blown asthma attack.

Jaime is still on 6 breathing treatments a day, two of them being steroids, he's still on antibiotics-his ears are reportedly "getting better" :) and he's on an oral steroid, too. That one was added again last night. Jaime's not a huge fan of this steroid, as we've had a really hard time getting it into him today. He gagged and threw up this afternoon after just 1ml of 5mls. We put the rest in his sippy cup and he refused to drink it. Thank goodness it's only once a day...I don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow...hmmmm....T-4 days.
Here it is 24 hours later...and I have a new baby! He's still coughing and breathing fast on and off, but his temp is down and he's eating a little bit more. We've had good wet diapers and he's just overall more pleasant! I keep telling the drs. that steroids do this boy a world of good. Not that he can live on steroids, but truly they work wonders for him. (Of course the jump start IV steroids and antibiotics didn't hurt, either!:) My only issues is, I wish they would have done all of this on Tuesday, but Jaime was afebrile (didn't have a fever) then, so really there was no point.
