Jaime Albert Trost was diagnosed with Right-Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia at 19 weeks gestation. He was born at 34 weeks gestation on 4/16/09 as a hemophiliac with his liver and intestines in his chest. Jaime had his 1st repair surgery at 23 days old. He re-herniated in September 2009, causing his bowels, kidney and liver to be up in his chest. He had his 2nd repair surgery at 194 days old. Though Jaime still has many medical challenges ahead of him, today he is a thriving KINDERGARTENER who has beaten the odds!

December 31st, 2008

New Year's Eve, 2008! We got a call at 11:00 A.M. from Dr. Corteville's (Maternal Fetal Medicine/Genetics) office to come in at noon for another ultra sound because their was a discrepancy in the initial images. (Hurray, we thought!) We dropped Jared off at our dear friends, the Smith's, house and went on our way. The staff and Dr. Corteville were very kind and sincerely concerned. Dr. Corteville scanned me herself and discovered that Jaime did indeed have right-sided CDH, which is the rarest type. She also said that his liver was partly herniated into his chest and that she also saw some intestines in his chest, too. In addition to the hernia, Jaime's heart is pushed all the way to the left side of his chest. Dr. Corteville explained to us that these babies usually only have a 20% survival rate. More bad news!
