Jaime Albert Trost was diagnosed with Right-Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia at 19 weeks gestation. He was born at 34 weeks gestation on 4/16/09 as a hemophiliac with his liver and intestines in his chest. Jaime had his 1st repair surgery at 23 days old. He re-herniated in September 2009, causing his bowels, kidney and liver to be up in his chest. He had his 2nd repair surgery at 194 days old. Though Jaime still has many medical challenges ahead of him, today he is a thriving KINDERGARTENER who has beaten the odds!

OT, ST, PT

Jaime had Noel from Occupational Therapy, Anne from Speech Therapy and Angela from Physical Therapy visit today. Anne and Noel worked together, Noel held Jaime and Anne fed him breast milk through a syringe. They were doing this for oral stimulation and taste. Jaime loved it! He sucked down the whole syringe. He can not bottle feed yet because the high flow oxygen is at 5 liters, but Anne is in the picture to keep his oral skills in shape for oral feeds one day. Anne will be back tomorrow, if Jaime knew time, I'm sure he'd be excited!
As for Angela, we love her, she's going to make sure that Jaime doesn't have torticollis like Jared. We've noticed that Jaime already has a "cervical preference," it's the left side, opposite his defect. This is quite normal with CDH babies. That's why Jaime has PT and OT.
Jaime was a bit agitated with his care today. He's been having his Methadone and Ativan weaned over the last week, so we're thinking that's why. There was talk in rounds about the possibility of us being here until August. Jaime can't move forward with feeds until the respiratory issues are resolved. As I said the other day, he's likely having a harder time with it because he's a preemie. Also, his rapid weight gain was mentioned in rounds today. Overall, he's less than 10% for height and weight for his age because of being a preemie. The drs. are thinking that his body is just playing "catch up." So, in short many of the issues he's experiencing aren't 100% due to the CDH, but are combined with the fact that he came early.

In Cleveland News: Jared and Tom are due back tomorrow. The boys apparently both got hair cuts today and did some errands. Also, Tammy invited the boys to dinner at El Charrito (a delicious Mexican restaurant in Wickliffe). Jared goes to school with Tammy's daughter Christine...the kids had a little "date night" tonight. ;-)
Tammy, I hear there's food being sent down with Tom...THANK YOU!!! I can't wait to enjoy "real" food for a change!

Enjoy the photos.

P.S. I almost forgot, Emily got Jaime a swizzle swing, he seems to really enjoy it!

  1. Anne is great! We met with her when we were up there and she did Carter's swallow study. I'm so glad to hear that he's progressing well. Keep up the great work!

  3. Jaime is in the hands of 3 great therapists. We had the most experience with Noelle, we miss her! We will be out in August, so it would be great to meet you, but it would be better for you all to be home by then. Prayers for figuring out his respiratory issues so you can go home. Are you settling into B pod? Is that Emily Johns you've mentioned? We love her too!!!
    continued hugs and prayers

  4. Jaime will get there - these babes - they got to let them lead in this dance and it just comes to be. August - that isn't far away. I know now it is but end of July it will not be!
